Who Can Run?

To run for Sheriff in Indiana, you must:

Be a U.S. citizen and a registered voter

Reside in the county where you're seeking office

Be eligible to hold public office under Indiana law

Not have served more than two terms in a 12-year period

In most counties, candidates for Sheriff are expected to have a background in law enforcement, public safety, or the military.

Time Commitment & Compensation

The position of Sheriff is a full-time executive and operational leadership role. The salary is set by the county council, in 2024 was $117,233.00 and typically includes benefits and retirement eligibility.
